Taster 3

A 6 track balearic / downtempo ep (20m 49s) — released May 1st 2006 on Cookshop

The third instalment of the ever popular Taster series on Cookshop brings you an eclectic gumbo of aural delights for listening and dancing gratification as only Cookshop know how. As always the idea behind the Taster is to both showcase resident Cookshop artists and support new upcoming artists who whilst are currently not big names are certainly doing something fresh and original that has pricked up the ears of the Cookshop masterchefs. Indeed past artists have often gone on to bigger things; DJ 2Tall (Eclectic Breaks/Needlework) and JFB (Hospital/One Eye) being a couple of examples. The Taster 3 kicks off with the first of two tracks from Norway's Implosion Quintet. A short work of real cinematic beauty 'Luksus Problem' freefalls gracefully like classic DJ Shadow and John Barry in a broken elevator. Next up bringing the bounce is an instrumental hip hop gem from Brighton based Scarf Face, full fat content guaranteed. Bringing the A side to a close is some dubbed-out latin-tinged goodness from Cookshop regulars the Outerlectuals; recorded on a house boat in Shoreham-By-Sea on a cold winter's day 'Hey Mister' is possibly the most summery cut we've heard in ages. Flip to the B side and Brighton hip hop hero Elemental (Managerie) takes you on a 'Grand Tour' of his inner thinkings, odd fellow! Cookshop label honch La Femme then steps up for a Blue Note inspired sambafied drum & bass riot on 'My Soul' leaving Implosion Quintet to calm things down with another real beauty of a piece entitled 'Phase Out'.'

the eclectic chefs at Cookshop offer another platter where you never can tell what flavour is coming next. 5/7 - Matt Oliver One Week To Live Magazine

Starting with the wonderful "Luskus Problem" from Norway's Implosion Quintet, a short - yet very sweet - flirt with cinematic funk...Scarf Face delivers the beat laden "Persian Shadows". Outerlectual's "Hey Mister" is a supreme slice of balearic niceness, full of relaxed atmospheres ...Elemental's "Grand Tour" is an addictive rap review of the inner-workings of one man's mind. La Femme delivers with a bossa-Blue Note like D&B moment on "My Soul", leaving Implosion Quintet to close in style with "Phase Out". A hefty package of music for one single disc - every turntable should have one. 5/5 - DARREN WALL DMC Update

A jolly assortment of tracks with something for everyone?or everything for someone! harted - no.10 - Ben Smith Big Chill + Trust The DJ

Brightons downbeat chefs certainly have the measure of their city. From dusted instrumentals and aspirations of cinematica through to sweaty junglism, all of breakbeat music can be found in this EP. Norwegian crew Implosion Quintet make the biggest impression, breaking it down like Broadway Project on a dogsled. KM - Leftfield column
