Taster 4

A 4 track balearic / downtempo ep (16m 40s) — released March 10th 2008 on Cookshop

Brighton based downtempo/electronic ambassadors Cookshop release the fourth installment of their ever popular Taster series. Like previous Taster EPs, this gathers up tracks from a handful of artists and squeezes them onto one handy slab of wax resulting in a versatile affair that offers something for everyone. This, the fourth installment of the series, kicks off with a cut n' paste rockabilly roller from Jonathan Krisp and confirms what Cookshop suspected all along, this man is not of sound mind. Horror samples, walking bass-lines, rolling drums and soundtrack strings all combine resulting in an infectious, humour-bound journey into the warped mind of monsieur Krisp. Next up Digital Midgets ties his dancing shoes firmly on and offers up a slice of deeply dubbed disco which is bound to rock the more discerning floor, bringing to mind artists such as the Idjut Boys, Emperor Machine and Greg Wilson. On the flip, a welcome return from drum & bass veterans Justice & DJ Pulse who serve up a sparse, heavy hip hop banger featuring the vocal talents of LA's Danoyd, a properly ruff track for those who like their hip hop a little left of centre. Rounding things off is a superb summery belearic rework of Lost Idol's ''Ugly Day'' courtesy of Jack To Phono artist Tom Eno; Tom twists the track into a laidback, dub-laden affair replete with melodica stabs, heavy bass and sterling acoustic guitar work from Mr Eno himself. Constant supporters of Cookshop include Strictly Kev (Ninja Tune), Mr Scruff, Nick Luscombe, Pete Isaac (Jelly Jazz), Dr Rubberfunk, and Found Sounds (DJ magazine).
